The Cannon House, formerly called The Petersen House, was built by George P. Jensen in 1895 for Theodore C. W. Petersen, a local artist known for his friezes, including the interior of California Hall on the UC Berkeley campus. In the early 1900’s, painter Jennie Canon moved to Berkeley and acquired the old Petersen house, which she turned into an at-home art gallery. She survived the Great Depression by subdividing her home into apartments.
In 1999 the building went up for sale and the new owners took it over, restoring it to what it is today. With an exquisite attention to detail the current owners have remodeled and restored this beautiful four-unit building while preserving its architectural integrity. There are 4 tastefully remodeled units, each with its own special charm. Outside, the terraced garden has been artfully designed to exude privacy, serenity and functionality.
